I’ve been attempting to learn mandarin Chinese, with attempting being the operative term, and what has struck me the most about the spoken aspect of the language is how much it feels like singing from sheet music. There is a dancing interaction of pitch, rhythm and of course intonation. And so it makes sense that we try to distill the written word into sonic forms.
